2016 statistics on foreign nationals

As at 31 December 2016, a total of 2,029,527 foreign nationals were living in Switzerland, corresponding to 24.18% of the resident population. This reflects an increase of 35'611, or 1,8% more than 12 months earlier.

Of these foreign nationals, 1,390,405 (68,5%) came from EU-28/EFTA countries. At 2 %, growth in this sub-population was marginally slower than it had been in 2015 (+3,8%).

At year-end, the three most widely represented foreign nationalities in Switzerland were Italian (318,653), German (304,706) and Portuguese (269,521).

A total of 77,590 foreign nationals left Switzerland between 1 January and 31 December 2016, compared with 73,444 over the same timeframe in 2015.
