On 30 November 2016, Basel hosted its third graduate employment fair, which was held in Hall 2.0 of the Basel Messe this year to accommodate the fair's growth.
With the support of EURES Switzerland, Germany and Denmark, 56 coveted companies and institutions - representing the technology, communications, insurance, wholesale, life sciences, banking/accountancy and public services sectors, to name just a few - drew crowds of interested jobseekers.
Attendees included 1,300 students and recent graduates in the fields of architecture/urban planning, engineering, life sciences, pharmaceuticals, economics, information technology and communications. They represented the University of Basel and all four campuses of the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland, located in Basel, Olten, Muttenz and Brugg/Windisch. Attendance surpassed last year's figures (8% more visitors).
EURES Switzerland's brand-new mobile stand was located in nearly the exact same spot as last year: along one of the two central corridors intersecting the hall, where visitor traffic was sure to be dense. The team staffing the stand met directly on site at 9am to finish final preparations and receive last-minute instructions before doors opened at 10. A "Company Catwalk", aimed at all participants, was held at 11:15 and 1:15, giving each business the opportunity to introduce and sell themselves as a top employer - in just one minute.
Fair visitors sought information on work placements and traineeships, employment in their career field and tips on working and living in the different countries represented. Exhibitors also fielded numerous general-interest questions regarding job-hunting, social security and more. Country representatives also posted job vacancies, which proved to be popular. Almost all flyers, brochures and lists of links were gone by the end of the event.
Martin Kaeser presented the EURES network as a source of information and advice available to anyone interested in employment and work placements in another European country. In addition, countless visitors learned about EURES' role as a comprehensive information network. Young jobseekers flocked to the stand, keeping EURES advisers fully occupied with their questions and information requests. The EURES adviser from Germany, the EURES representative from Sweden and the two EURES advisers from Denmark were extremely pleased with the event's organisation and the interest shown in their respective countries. All of them reported a positive experience, stating they would not hesitate to participate in future graduate job fairs. e from Sweden and the two EURES advisers from Denmark were extremely pleased with the event's organisation and the interest shown in their respective countries.
