In the spring of 2013, EURES Switzerland held a job fair in Turin, in association with local EURES colleagues, to recruit skilled construction personnel in order to make up for current shortage in the Swiss industry. Our Italian colleagues started by publishing the required profiles on employment-office job platforms. Along with hands-on professional experience, potential candidates needed to have a level of at least level A2 in German (The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages CEFR).
Around 200 job seekers responded to the advertisement in April. A shortlist was then drawn up and, a few weeks later, 53 skilled workers were invited to attend interviews in Turin, where Swiss recruiters selected suitable candidates for work assignments in Switzerland. In all, 12 people were chosen and started working on construction sites at the end of May 2013.
The greatest challenge when recruiting qualified construction personnel from abroad is their level of German. Though these workers are extremely able in practical domains, not many have the right foreign-language skills.
